IND v ENG: R Ashwin becomes 2nd Indian to pick 5-wicket haul in his 100th Test
- Updated Saturday Mar 09 2024
- R Ashwin made his 100th Test even more memorable by picking up a 5-wicket haul in the 2nd innings. The off-spinner ran through the England batting order on Day 3 of the 5th and final Test of the series with a masterful display at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Ashwin became only the fourth bowler after the legendary trio of Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble to pick a 5-wicket haul in his 100th Test match.
Ashwin achieved the feat when he dismissed England's wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes in the second session on Day 3. Ashwin loved the dismissal as he clenched his fists in joy after sneaking one through the gap between the wicketkeeper's bat and pads. It was a classical off-spinner's dismissal as Ashwin induced a rare loose shot from Foakes by giving the ball air and turning it sharply. | Dharamsala Test, India vs England: Scorecard |
It was the 36th five-wicket haul for R Ashwin as he went past Anil Kumble to top the list of Indians with most number of 5-wicket hauls in Test cricket.
Ashwin also equalled Richard Hadlee on the all-time list of bowlers with the most number of 5-wicket hauls in the longest format of the game.

R Ashwin also achieved a unique feat as he became the first bowler in the history of Test cricket to pick a 5-wicket haul on debut and 100th Tests.
Ashwin overcame a slow start in the series to emerge as the leading wicket-taker. The off-spinner took his tally to 9 wickets in his landmark Test after having picked up a 5-wicket haul in the second innings of the Ranchi Test.
Ashwin ran through England's top-order on Saturday, dismissing openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett before getting Ollie Pope. Ashwin hurt England more by castling Ben Stokes for 2 just before the Lunch break.
Ashwin has a total of 26 wickets in 5 Tests in the series, which also saw him becoming the second Indian bowler to pick more than 500 Test wickets.
